Christmas video advert inspiration – Claire’s festive video picks

22nd November 2013

Christmas video ad campaigns from big brands are now as much of a festive tradition as the holly and the ivy.

John Lewis’ video ad, ‘The Bear and the Hare’ really hit the headlines, with the brand maximising social media buzz. According to YouGov’s social media analysis tool, SoMA, 58% of UK Twitter users have seen a John Lewis mention since the video ad launched.

But which Christmas video marketing campaigns have put the sparkle in team Hurricane’s week? Read on for our Production Manager, Claire’s top three Christmas ads…

M & S video ad goes social

Marks and Spencer’s video advert featuring Helena Bonham-Cater and Rosie Huntington-Whitely certainly has high production values. Alice in Wonderfand meets the Wizard of Oz combine to create a campaign around the theme ‘Believe in Magic and Sparkle’.

This is the first Christmas that the brand chose to launch their advert via social media channels. A teaser trailer was shared first on Youtube, Twitter and Facebook, and then the full advert was shared. TV audiences had to wait a week after the initial teaser to see it during an advert break in Coronation Street.

As part of an integrated marketing campaign, viewers also voted on the name of the cute highland terrier in the advert via social media channels.

As with many of these high-profile adverts, there is a ‘Making of…” too.

Lego Let’s Build Advert (go easy on the brussel sprouts)

Lego’s advert runs with the relationship between a father and son. It is not as overtly festive as the previous adverts mentioned, but it reinforces the playful aspect of the product and the way that it can bring families together. The kid’s point of view gives the video a touch of humour and also plays on the emotions of parents, who won’t want to miss out on these moments.
